Australian growers sowed just under 92,000 hectares of canola onto last year’s canola stubble this winter, new analysis from DAS Grain Intelligence shows.

That represents 2.1% of the national canola crop and is the highest share in the eight seasons DAS has tracked the practice. The 2026 repeat canola area is 7% higher than the previous peak in 2022, despite the national canola crop being around 260,000 hectares smaller.

The findings are detailed in our new report, Canola on Canola: The 2026 Season, which uses DAS Grain Intelligence to examine where repeat canola is occurring across New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, and how the pattern has changed since 2019.

The analysis is significant given GRDC’s Blackleg Management Guide warns that canola on canola risks significant yield loss and shortens the effective life of canola cultivars and the fungicides used to protect them.

The 2026 results show that it is not only the national area that has changed. The geographic distribution of repeat canola has shifted since the previous peak in 2022, while paddock-level analysis shows different forms of the practice occurring across Australia’s cropping regions.
