## Drought: Should Insurers Care?

Australian insurers have spent decades getting better at understanding where flood, fire, storm and cyclone risk sits.

But what about the conditions building before the event?

Drought is a different kind of physical climate risk. It develops quietly, often over months or years, and may never present as a standalone insurance event.

Instead, it can sit in the background, influencing customer vulnerability, underinsurance and portfolio concentration, while creating the conditions that can amplify other insured perils, including fire and property damage.

That raises an important question: **Is drought now one of the most underestimated climate risks in Australian insurance?**

Our latest report, **The $12 Billion Risk Insurers Aren’t Pricing**, takes a closer look.

##### A risk that is changing shape

New DAS analysis estimates that a single flash drought season could cost Australia **up to $12 billion in forgone GDP**.

But for insurers, the bigger issue may be what happens before that economic impact becomes obvious.

Unlike flood or fire, drought rarely arrives as a single event. It accumulates. And the emergence of **flash drought**, where conditions can deteriorate from normal to drought within weeks or months, adds another dimension to that challenge. DAS Drought Report

It means drought may warrant attention not simply as a standalone physical climate risk, but as part of a much broader portfolio risk picture.

##### The national number isn't the risk

Drought risk is highly location-specific. National and regional averages can show broad conditions, but they can also conceal significant differences in exposure between individual properties. DAS Drought Report

DAS has analysed drought risk across **3.15 million agricultural parcels across mainland Australia**, examining current conditions and how exposure could change under future climate scenarios.

The analysis points to **tens of thousands of rural properties potentially exposed to drought stress** across near-term 2030 and longer-term 2050 scenarios.

Where that exposure sits, how it is accumulating and where the trajectory is changing is where the story becomes particularly interesting.

##### A new risk frontier for rural insurance

**The $12 Billion Risk Insurers Aren’t Pricing** explores what drought and flash drought could mean for Australian insurers, including:

- drought as a compound risk accelerant for fire and property damage
- the changing speed and geography of drought risk
- current and future exposure across Australian rural properties
- the implications for underwriting, portfolio risk and mandatory climate disclosure
- why water security could represent the next frontier in rural insurance risk.

For insurers, the question is increasingly not simply whether drought represents a physical climate risk.

It's **where that risk sits across the portfolio, how it is changing and what else it could be telling you.**
